Discussion

Peripheral neuropathy is the dysfunction of nerves that lie outside the central nervous system; i.e., those nerves not involved in the brain and spinal cord.  The risk for peripheral neuropathy is highest among those who have any of the following, let alone all of these conditions: diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, over the age of 40.

Although there are many types of peripheral neuropathy, most commonly, this disorder involves an abnormal sensation or numbness in the hands and feet.

Three Types of Peripheral Nerves

  • Sensory – as the name implies, those that give you the sense of touch, pain, and temperature
  • Motor – those nerves involved in signaling muscles to contract
  • Autonomic – the nerves that connect to your internal organs

Peripheral neuropathy can involve one, two, or all three of these nerve groups, which is why there are more than 100 types of peripheral neuropathies.

Sensory Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms

  • Tingling, vibrations, or buzzing, most commonly in the hands and/or feet
  • Numbness, most commonly in the hands and/or feet
  • Pain – e.g., complex regional pain syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, etc.
  • Feeling of wearing gloves or socks

Motor Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms

  • Frequently dropping things
  • Mis-stepping, or tripping over toes
  • Weakness
  • Heavy feeling of arms and legs, making it difficult to move

Autonomic Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastroparesis, a reduced, or lack, of gastro-intestinal peristalsis
  • Low blood pressure, or drops in blood pressure
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Excessive sweating, or lack of sweating

Not all symptoms mentioned above indicate peripheral neuropathy, as other disorders may manifest with the same symptoms.

Peripheral neuropathy is most commonly a result of diabetes, caused by chronic inflammation and oxidation to the nerves.  However, all tissues are oxidized and inflamed, not just the nerves.  With diabetes, the arteries are damaged due to high blood sugar levels, leading to oxidation and inflammation throughout every organ and tissue, which is why diabetics are at an increased risk of developing most chronic diseases.

Although peripheral neuropathy is most commonly associated with diabetes, other conditions can increase the level of oxidation and inflammation to the nerves, those include:

  • Hypothyroidism – untreated, fluid buildup in tissues puts pressure on nerves
  • Kidney diseases – toxins buildup in bloodstream, and increase oxidative damage
  • Inflammatory diseases – most chronic diseases are inflammatory in nature
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Viral infections – e.g., herpes virus, EBV, chicken pox, shingles, etc.
  • Bacterial infections – e.g., Lyme disease
  • Micronutrient deficiency – particularly vitamins B1, B6, B12, and vitamin E
  • Injury to nerve – for example, pressure on nerves exiting spinal column
  • Alcohol, chronic use
  • Toxic chemicals – solvents, insecticides, aspartame artificial sweetener
  • Medications – e.g., cancer drugs, anticonvulsants, some blood pressure drugs

Treatment

Typically, doctors treat the symptoms.  If a person is experiencing pain, Non-Steroidal-Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are used.  However chronic use of NSAIDs have significant side effects.  Cox-2 inhibitors are used, but micronutrients, such as grape seed extract and curcumin (turmeric extract) block the cox-2 enzyme (which is associated with inflammation), and have many other beneficial effects as well, including powerful antioxidant benefits.

Corticosteroids are sometimes used, including injections, but that can result in tissue damage.  Anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications are used with varying degree of success, and with the possibility of side effects.  For erectile dysfunction, Viagra, Cialis, etc. are used.

Electro-Therapy: Micro-Current Treatment

Micro-current electrotherapy often produces good results.  The “micro-current” technology I have seen that works best is actually works at a pico-current, a billionth of an amperage of electricity, which is the amperage that the cell membranes (calcium channels) operate at.

A TENS unit (electrical stimulation unit), often recommended by doctors, works at the micro-current level, many times the amperage of the cell membrane.  It shuts down nerve conduction, and in so doing blocks the pain.  The pico-current electro-therapy helps the nerve function more normally, and so doing reduces the pain and restores the nerve (if it is not too badly damaged).

The Electro-Equiscope that is used at Sanoviv Medical Institute is what I have seen work best.  Even my wife, Heather Gotham, was trained on this device, and is a micro-current technician.  We have the good fortune of having an Equiscope device in our home, and we have seen amazing results for nerve, muscle, and bone recovery and healing. To read more about the Electro-Equiscope, how it works, and obtaining treatment or the device itself, please read my article by CLICKING HERE.

Although the Electro-Equiscope is effective, it is even more effective if done in combination with quality nutritional supplementation.  Micronutrients are essential for protection, functioning, and repair of nerves, and quality micronutrients must be provided in proper balances, ratios, doses, and purity to be most effective

Nutritional Supplements for Prevention and Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy

Multiple animal and human studies have shown the effectiveness of both protection and reduction in pain and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy with the use of various micronutrients. Some studies show that a combination of micronutrients work better synergistically than individually. (see references below)

Studies have shown that various vitamins and minerals, including the B vitamins, vitamin D, and vitamin E. The omega-3 fatty acids, DHA (fish oil) is beneficial, as are the flavonoid antioxidants.

Oxidative stress and inflammation of the neurons trigger pain, and antioxidants are powerful in neutralizing both of these effects, including reducing pain. Grape seed extract, resveratrol, quercetin, and curcumin (turmeric extract), are all powerful flavonoid antioxidants, and when used together, they are more effective in providing results.

Alpha lipoic acid, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, and Co-enzyme Q10 has also shown to be effective in preventing and improving peripheral neuropathy. Even melatonin, a powerful antioxidant with tremendous benefits in keeping neurons healthy and functional, and probiotics, both help patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy.

Bacopa extract is beneficial for memory, mood, cognitive function, and for improving functioning of neurons, both in the central and peripheral nervous system. It is also a powerful antioxidant.

Beta glucan polysaccharides, from the Reishi and Shiitake mushrooms, as well as Baker’s Yeast extract, are polysaccharides that have significant health benefits. They are a type of fiber that is resistant to stomach acid, so that they pass through the stomach virtually unchanged.  Macrophages within the intestinal wall bind with the beta glucan particles through their beta glucan receptors (Dectin-1). This signal activates macrophages to seek and destroy bacteria or viruses that get into the bowel wall. Macrophages travel via lymph vessels to local lymph nodes called Payer’s Patches.

There beta glucans continue to signal the macrophages to release pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce systematic immune activation of other white blood cells throughout the body. Though the immune system is activated by beta glucans, they do not cause an over-reaction.  Rather, they support the immune system to help battle infections and cancer.

Beta glucans modulate inflammation throughout the body, including within the brain, where they have a beneficial effect on slowing CNS inflammatory cytokines, the pathological process that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. In both human and animal studies, beta glucan polysaccharides show the effects of neuroprotection, improved cognition, and improved mood. Ideally, these supplements would be used to protect against the development of peripheral neuropathy. For example, a diabetic would be wise to take such supplements, not only to improve diabetes, but to also reduce risk of developing peripheral neuropathy.

Those with chronic, severe peripheral neuropathy will need to use the higher-dose protocols below for at least a year to see significant results. It took a long time to develop peripheral neuropathy, it will take time for repair.

Supplement Protocol for Peripheral Neuropathy

Below are the three levels of my protocol that will often help with peripheral neuropathy.  There is often the need for adjunctive therapies, which may include medications, but I would suggest seeking out therapies with the “micro-current” (pico-current) technology, as mentioned above, if adjunctive therapy is needed beyond the supplement protocol.

This article and protocol are for informational purposes only, and not intended as medical advice. Please read the medical disclaimer below, and consult with your personal physician prior to taking supplements or acting upon any information within this article or protocol, or found on the Dr. Ladd VIP website.

Minimal Protocol for Peripheral Neuropathy

Basic Protocol for Peripheral Neuropathy

Average Protocol for Peripheral Neuropathy

Advanced Protocol for Peripheral Neuropathy

  • Please see my list of ingredients (below) that I like to see provided by a foundational vitamin and mineral supplement.
  • Bacopa extract (150 mg per tablet), combined with Coffee Cherry Extract and American Ginseng Extract.  American Ginseng Extract, as opposed to Korean Ginseng, is not stimulating.  Coffee Cherry Extract has negligible amount of caffeine (Less 0.3 mg of caffeine per two tablets, which is about 1/10th the amount of that in a cup of decaffeinated coffee).
  • Beta Glucans are derived from Reishi and Shiitake Mushrooms, as well as Baker’s Yeast Extract.  They boost the immune system, to help fight viruses, bacteria, fungi, and cancer cells. They also help reduce heart disease, diabetes, and support nerve and neuronal function.
  • Probiotics, at least take 12 billion colony-forming bacteria, providing Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG® and Bifidobacterium BB12 every other day or daily.
  • Liver support supplement that provides numerous ingredients, including N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC), turmeric extract (curcumin), green tea extract, olive extract, broccoli extract, alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle extract, and biotin.  Although this product may be marketed as a liver support supplement, it also supports heart health, eye health, brain and nerve health (protecting against neuronal damage) as well as supports the immune system.
  • Melatonin helps with sleep-wake cycles, and getting into deeper stages of sleep, but does not necessarily help you get to sleep.  It should not be considered a sleeping pill. It is also a powerful antioxidant, which works everywhere in the body.  It reduces inflammation in the brain and nerves, protecting the neurons, and also supports the immune system.
  • DHEA, 50 mg micronized capsules, Ultra Lipoic Acid, and Acetyl-L-Carnitine can all be purchased from Douglas Labs.  First, set up a customer account from Douglas Labs by CLICKING HERE, and please use Referral Code 2074214. Then, simply search for the products by name.
