High blood pressure is a big risk for heart attack and stroke. It is not only important to maintain a healthy blood pressure, it is important to get to the root that may be causing high blood pressure.
Regulation of blood pressure is a complex interplay of many factors, stemming from the brain, the heart, the arteries, and the kidneys. A major cause of high blood pressure is atherosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries (calcification of arterial plaque). The concept of the protocol is to provide micronutrients that act on arterial smooth muscles, prevention of hardening of the arteries, and supporting the heart, brain, and kidneys.
Calcium and magnesium have a role in muscle contraction and relaxation. If the smooth muscle is relaxed, then the arteries will open, reducing resistance and normalizing blood pressure. That is one simple factor, along with other minerals and vitamins, that help maintain a normal blood pressure. Getting plenty of magnesium is important to help with maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Grape seed extract, olive extract, turmeric extract (curcumin), and other nutrients help maintain a healthy blood pressure in many ways, including by helping to reduce hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Fish oil supplements also assist in supporting a healthy blood pressure. Co-enzyme Q10, a vitamin antioxidant helps support heart health, brain and kidney health, and arterial health. All these micronutrients work synergistically in helping to maintain a normal blood pressure.
The release of nitric oxide from the arterial walls helps open the arteries, and reducing resistance, and normalizing blood pressure.
Grape seed extract, resveratrol, turmeric extract, olive extract, green tea extract, and several other flavonoid antioxidants induce the release of nitric oxide, and help support a healthy blood pressure. In addition, grape seed extract reduces oxidation and inflammation of arterial walls, reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries. (Hardening of the arteries is a major cause for high blood pressure.)
Vitamin D, B complex vitamins, even beta glucans, which are derived from the cell membranes of the reishii, shiitake mushrooms, and baker’s yeast extracts, all help normalize blood pressure. Beta glucan polysaccharides are also helpful in supporting the immune system, as they activate white blood cells to attack and kill bacteria, virusus, mold/yeast, and cancer cells. They also help support a normal blood sugar level and elevate mood. This is a supplement with many benefits, including supporting a healthy blood pressure.
I have added the “vision support” supplement to this protocol because carotenoids help with the release of nitric oxide, and work synergistically with the micronutrients mentioned above to help normalize blood pressure.
Vitamin K2 is helpful to maintain a healthy blood pressure by reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, because vitamin K2 helps prevent calcium from building up within the arterial plaque. Vitamin K2 helps calcium to be deposited into bones and teeth, while helping to prevent arterial calcification.
Micronutrients are safe and effective, and in my experience of over 25 years of using and recommending high quality nutritional supplements, many people have experienced improvement in blood pressure. Patients, family members, and thousands of others have experienced various levels of improvement in their blood pressure, usually based upon how severe their blood pressure is, as well as what level of the supplement protocol they were willing to use. Some people who went on the supplement protocol no longer needed blood pressure medication after 3 or 4 months, and others did not require blood pressure medications after 1 year on the protocol. Others have been able to work with their doctors to lower their doses of medications, which usually means possible side effects from medications. Please note: Do not stop or change your blood pressure medication without consulting with your doctor.
I have provided a basic protocol for mild hypertension, one for moderate, and another for severe hypertension. This is not intended to replace medications, although I have seen patients come off their blood pressure medications and do well with proper diet, exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and the use of nutritional supplements. The more of the below supplements one takes, and broader range of supplements (which do not interfere with any medications for blood pressure), the more likely a person will have the desired results.
