Discussion

The key to managing, controlling, and reversing irritable bowel syndrome, or colitis, is to reduce intestinal inflammation, which may be caused by a reaction to certain foods and/or stress, and made worse by bacteria getting between the cells lining the intestinal tract.

In addition to avoiding foods that one may be sensitive to, specific nutritional supplements are critical, along with the amino acid, L-glutamine.

Stress

Stress is a common culprit in triggering irritable bowel syndrome. Reducing stress, and reducing cortisol release, can help reduce gastro-intestinal symptoms. A Stress Relief supplement providing saffron extract, lemon balm extract, and ashwagandha extract can help reduce stress, anxiety, mild depression, and reduce cortisol levels. Take this supplement, along with other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce problems with irritable bowel syndrome.

Beta glucans, derived from the cell membranes of reishi and shiitake mushrooms, as well as baker’s yeast extract, are helpful in suppressing viruses, bacteria, and fungi.  They help the immune system to target and kill cancer cells.  Beta glucans can also help reduce the effects of stress and elevate mood. This is particularly helpful in those with colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome.

5-HTP is 5-hydroxy-L-tyrptophan, and is a precursor to production of serotonin, a mood enhancing hormone. Taking 75 – 300 mg twice daily not only helps reduce mild-to-moderate depression, anxiety, and stress, and can be used in addition to the above mentioned supplements.

Probiotics

Probiotics are needed to establish the correct bacteria in the bowel. This helps with digestion, less inflammation, supports the immune system, and helps with mood.

Digestive enzymes are needed to help break down foods, helps with stomach upset, reflux, gas, bloating, and with the artichoke extract in the digestive enzymes, it helps with bile secretion which helps proper intestinal functioning.

Even though a person may be having bouts of diarrhea, introducing small amounts of fiber (balanced soluble and insoluble fiber) into the diet will help normalize the bowel movements. This is something that needs to be done gradually to avoid diarrhea, gas, and bloating.

It may be helpful to find out which foods to which one may have a sensitivity. You can ask your doctor to order a food allergy test (blood test). This food sensitivity blood test usually tests for the sensitivity to 90+ different foods. It is an IgA antibody test. A skin test (IgE) cannot test for delayed food sensitivities, which is an issue in many cases of colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome.

Supplement Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Colitis)

Please read the medical disclaimer below, and consult your health care professional prior to acting upon any information provided in this article, protocol, or website.

Minimal Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Basic Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Average Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Advanced Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • AM: With, or after breakfast
  • Noon: At lunchtime with food, or shortly thereafter
  • PM: Late afternoon with food, or at, or after dinner
  • Please see my list of ingredients (below) that I like to see provided by a foundational vitamin and mineral supplement, as well as what is in the liver health supplement I use.
  • Stress Relief Supplement providing Saffron Extract, Lemon Balm Extract, and Ashwagandha Extract.
  • Liver Support Supplement providing Milk Thistle Extract, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Broccoli Extract, Turmeric Extract (Curcumin), Olive Extract, Green Tea Extract, and Biotin.
  • Beta-glucans derived from Shiitake and Reishi mushrooms and baker’s yeast extract provide numerous benefits beyond supporting brain health and immune support. (Although there is some controversy as to whether a person with an autoimmune disorder should take beta-glucan supplement, the preponderance of the evidence shows that beta-glucans confer numerous beneficial effects, and just may help “normalize” the immune system in everyone.)
  • Probiotics, at least take 12 billion colony-forming bacteria, providing Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG® and Bifidobacterium BB12®, every other day or daily.
  • L-Glutamine and DHEA can be purchased from Douglas Labs by first creating a customer account by CLICKING HERE.  (If this link does not work for you, simply type “douglaslabs.com/patient-account” into a new browser tab.) Please use Referral Code 2074214.
